Description

The IS640-17 5µm lens is non-radiometric and therefore several extra steps are required to perform accurate temperature measurements on surfaces that require emissivity table compensation.

Install Lens

  1. Install the lens on the camera.

Prepare Device

  1. Place the unpowered device on the thermal stage with thermal pad or grease between the stage and device to improve thermal conductivity.
  2. Cut high insulation sheet to cover exposed thermal stage around device (1/8" polyimide sheet can  be used).
  3. Heat the stage to 50°C and allow the device temperature to stabilize.

Focus Lens

  1. Adjust camera height so device is in focus.

Setup Thermalyze Software

  1. Enable Image Averaging and set to 64 images.
  2. Set the Image Sequence Record Rate to 1/sec.

Prepare a Lens Calibration Surface

  1. Place a 100x100 mm section of 1/8" Polyimide insulation sheet on the benchtop away from any heat source and let stabilize to ambient room temperature (corrugated box material can also be used).

Perform Uniformity Correction

  1. Disable Uniformity Correction.
  2. Open the Uniformity Correction window.
  3. Measure the ambient air temperature to ±1° accuracy.
  4. Set Low Temperature to the measured ambient temperature.
  5. Pick up the Lens Calibration Surface and hold by the edges so that your fingers do not heat up the top or bottom surface.
  6. Quickly place the surface directly under the lens (approximately 2mm away from the lens), wait for 2 seconds, and then click the Set Low Temperature Image button.
  7. Place the Lens Calibration Surface back on the benchtop.
  8. Enable Uniformity Correction

Check Uniformity Correction

  1. Draw a rectangle region enclosing the unpowered device.
  2. Note the Max temperature in the region.
  3. If Max is above 50°C, calculate the difference between Max and 50° (Delta = Max - 50).
  4. Repeat section [Perform Uniformity Correction] but increase Low Temperature by an amount equal to Delta.

Record Image Sequence

  1. Press the Record Images button to start recording sequence images.
  2. Wait 5 seconds and then power the device.
  3. Allow the device temperature to reach maximum steady-state temperature and then remove device power.
  4. Unpress the Capture Images button to stop capturing images.  This will also stop recording sequence images.
  5. You may want to save the image sequence at this time.

Perform Emissivity Correction

  1. Using the sequence slider, scroll through sequence images to display the image recorded immediately before power was applied (before the device started heating up).
  2. Open the Emissivity Table window.
  3. Set Control Temperature to 50°C.
  4. Click Create Single 1 to create a single point emissivity table.
  5. Draw a rectangle region enclosing the device so that the emissivity table will be applied to pixels within the region.
  6. Scroll through the sequence images to view images after power was applied.
